I know it is October when I am watching football on television and I see the football players wearing bright pink gloves. Silly? right? Well maybe not. Breast caner is the most common type of cancer in women outside of melanoma. In fact, 1 out of every 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Just under 30% of cancers in women are breast cancers!
A few years ago my grandmother had a lump removed. During that time one of my friends (in her 30?s) at work was diagnosed with breast cancer and was going through treatment after treatment. I watched as she lost her hair and got really sick. It was a very helpless feeling watching a friend go through what women with cancer have to go through in order to beat the disease.
Luckily both my grandmother and my friend are okay, that doesn?t happen for everyone. Early detection can save a life. I know that on the first of every month I make sure to do a breast exam in the shower. This is all it takes, a few minutes a month. This is all why October is such a big deal for women, its breast cancer awareness month.
Try to get in the habit of doing a breast self-examination once a month to familiarize yourself with how your breasts normally look and feel. Examine yourself several days after your period ends, when your breasts are least likely to be swollen and tender. If you are no longer having periods, choose a day that?s easy to remember, such as the first or last day of the month.
