Drake Sort of Speaks on Chris Brown Brawl in Concert

With some cryptic remarks at his concert Saturday night, Drake broke his silence about his alleged involvement in a violent bar brawl with Chris Brown last week.

Days after the brawl left several people injured, caused massive property damage and got W.i.P. nightclub shut down, many unanswered questions remain.

Drake cleared up none of them at Jones Beach in Long Island, N.Y., but he did appear to allude to the bottle-bashing melee between his crew and Brown's.

According to the N.Y. Daily News, Drake told the crowd:

Drake Live

"When I woke up this morning, I had to think about a lot of things. But the only thing I gave a f--k about was that I was in New York City tonight."

Later during the show, he said, "It's last call and you're really too drunk to give a f--k ... A n---a in the corner is standing there looking at you funny."

"You bump elbows with him on the way to the bathroom, but really there's only one n---a that you got to think about."

So, yeah. There you go. Read into that however you like!

Until this, the rapper has remained largely silent, issuing a statement through his rep last week that denied any involvement in the fracas.

The club was shut down by law enforcement officials, who cited a litany of previous violations that culminated in Thursday's notorious brawl.

Chris Brown was hurt in the brawl, which also injured NBA star Tony Parker, model Lucy Pavlovsky, Chris' bodyguard Big Pat and numerous others.

Romney won't say he'll overturn immigration order

(AP) ? Mitt Romney is refusing to say that he would overturn President Barack Obama's new policy allowing some young illegal immigrants to stay in the United States.

The Republican presidential candidate was asked three times in an interview on CBS' "Face the Nation" whether he would overturn the executive order issued Friday if he's elected in the fall. He refused to directly answer.

"It would be overtaken by events," Romney said when pressed for the second time by moderator Bob Schieffer during the interview taped Saturday while the former Massachusetts governor's bus tour stopped in Pennsylvania.

He explained the order would become irrelevant "by virtue of my putting in place a long-term solution, with legislation which creates law that relates to these individuals such that they know what their setting is going to be, not just for the term of a president but on a permanent basis."

Romney's Rust Belt tour swept through Ohio on Sunday. He attended a Father's Day pancake breakfast with two of his sons and five of his 18 grandchildren. He told a rain-soaked crowd that the weather was a metaphor for the country and that "three and half years of dark clouds are about to part."

He planned two additional stops in the state Sunday.

In the TV interview, Romney suggested that Obama's decision on immigration was motivated by politics. "If he felt seriously about this he should have taken action when he had a Democrat House and Senate, but he didn't. He saves these sort of things until four and a half months before the general election," he said.

Obama adviser David Plouffe, sent by the White House to four of the talk shows, contended that Obama's action, which appeals to Hispanic voters who are critical to the president's re-election effort, was not "a political move."

Obama's order has put Romney in the difficult position, forcing him to decide between possibly alienating Hispanic voters with tough talk or stoking anger within a conservative GOP base that was slow to warm to him during the primary process.

Romney's comments represent a further softening of his rhetoric on immigration since the GOP primary campaign ended.

For example, before the Iowa caucuses in January, when he faced the challenge of winning over the right-wing base of the GOP, he pledged to veto legislation backed by Democrats that would have created a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. Instead of emphasizing the plight of illegal immigrants, Romney focused on the consequences illegal immigration has for U.S. jobs.

Obama's immigration announcement disrupted the start of Romney's five-day bus tour through small cities and towns in six important states.

The tour, now on its third day, scheduled two stops are in Ohio towns just outside the metropolitan areas of Cleveland and Columbus. Romney spent the first two days in New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, where he assailed Obama and insisted that he's the candidate who will give middle-class Americans "a fair shot."

The Obama administration said the policy change announced Friday will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants who have lived in fear of deportation. Obama's move bypasses Congress and partially achieves the goals of the Democrats' long-stalled legislation aimed at young illegal immigrants who went to college or served in the military.

Under the administration plan, illegal immigrants will be able to avoid deportation if they can prove they were brought to the United States before they turned 16 and are younger than 30, have been in the country for at least five continuous years, have no criminal history, graduated from a U.S. high school or earned a GED diploma or certificate, or served in the military. They also can apply for a work permit that will be good for two years with no limits on how many times it can be renewed.

Romney's CBS interview was his first in more than a year with a Sunday talk show on a network other than Fox. It covered a range of topics, including health care, Romney's political future and the European financial crisis.

Romney said that the American banking sector "is able to weather the storm" in Europe. He said European countries are capable of dealing with their mess "if they choose to do so" and the U.S. doesn't want to get into the business of bailing out foreign banks. Romney also does not favor another round of economic stimulus by the Federal Reserve, saying a previous one didn't have the desired effect.

The former Massachusetts governor, whose health care plan for the state served as the model for the national health reform law, outlined steps he'd take if the Supreme Court strikes it down. On Iran, Romney said he would be willing to "take military action if necessary" to prevent the country from becoming a nuclear power.

Romney also insisted that he isn't worried about his own political future. "I don't have a political career," Romney said. "I spent my life in the private sector. I don't care about re-elections."

Schieffer asked, "So you're not saying you just intend to serve one term?"

Romney replied that for him "this is not about politics. This is not about did I win this or did they win this. This is about what can we do to get America right."

Karen Kimsey-House: Disrupt Your Life in a Good Way, Pt. 4: Looking Good and Getting It Right... A Recipe for Despair

Some years ago, I was helping my 5-year-old niece, Christin, plant a summer garden in her backyard in Michigan. We started with the marigolds, tucking their porcupine quill-like seeds into the fresh-dug soil down a nice, long row. When we finished, I put the seed packet with its picture of the orange flowers onto the end of a popsicle stick and stuck it in the ground next to the row we'd sown. She turned it so the picture faced inwards towards the row of marigolds. "Turn it back around so we can see the picture of what's growing there, Christin," I said. "But how will the marigolds know what they're supposed to be?" she asked innocently. "How they're supposed to look?"

Wouldn't that be funny if that's how it worked? And it got me thinking: Ironically, that's how it is for too many people -- they look outside of themselves for instructions on who to be, how to look good and be appropriate. After all, it's important to behave so they'll be accepted and liked, know how to say the right things to get ahead and be popular and become what is wanted and expected in the community. All annals of power and virtually every measure of success are dominated by this mandatory Looking Good and Getting It Right. It's about dressing for success, brown-nosing the right people and calculating a low-risk life so you don't embarrass yourself or end up rejected or homeless.

I am going on record with something right now: Of all the things people do to get in their own way of living a deeply fulfilling life, Looking Good and Getting It Right is the worst tyranny I know. It keeps us locked up and separate from ourselves with no chance to really feel alive. It's self-abandoning -- a spiritual death. It is the great lie that we somehow have to earn our right to be worthy.

Looking Good and Getting It Right is about prostituting ourselves, folks.

As a result, the world is full of walking dead people. We're trained from the get-go to follow this program. While parenting has improved, children are still largely seen and (not really) heard. Schools do a remarkably effective job of conditioning the uniqueness and authenticity out of us. I started school on a military base and I can remember we 6-year-olds had to stand on this checkerboard floor to wait our turn for the restroom. Girls in one line and boys in the other, each person inside a block of white or black. We all had to stand perfectly still, arms at our sides, silent and not touching each other before anyone was allowed to go to the toilet. Really? I wet my pants once waiting on that checkerboard.

We are systematically taught, just like that little marigold, to look outside ourselves for what is appropriate, what is Right, what Looks Good. Once we do this, we can't find our own compass and we don't know who we are. We are separated from our oneness with Spirit and the absolute fact that we belong to life, that we have value just because we draw breath. We jump onto the track of trying, proving, earning our worth.

People tend to focus their Looking Good and Getting It Right in particular areas. For instance, over my life, I've been wildly self-expressed and bold in many ways, but I've been bound by my body image. This isn't just about spiritual death or aliveness -- it's quite literal for me in this case. I was a bulimic from ages 18 to 32. Breaking free from that and from all the distorted body images that I had ingested was one of the hardest things I've ever done. To this day, I still struggle with body image.

For me, it was about my body and about being good enough and right enough to deserve love. For others, it is about being smart enough or avoiding failure at all costs. We each get wounded in a different way. There is so much pain, shame and fear around this issue -- it goes very, very deep. If I had a magic wand, the one thing I would do to help people change is remove their urge for Looking Good and Getting It Right.

So why do we go along with this program? We're so afraid of failure. Somehow, there's this idea that information is knowledge. But guess what? Information is just data. Knowledge comes from experience and being connected to your own internal compass -- by failing and learning from it. You can't become wise without failing along the way. The problem is that the educational system and business world makes it impossible to fail. It's somewhere between highly discouraged and forbidden.

The alternative is scary and risky. People can't play fast and loose. Imagine a guy who has three kids and a mortgage. He can't afford to take risks, so he learns to follow the rules. Stepping out into the untried territory can be dangerous. The world is not kind to pioneers -- they get a lot of arrows in their backs, believe me. I get it: You're vulnerable. Nobody wants to look stupid. Looking Good and Getting It Right keeps you safe.

It also separates you from real growth and self-knowledge.

There are almost seven billion people on the planet. If I'm trying to get everyone to like me or approve of me, I'll wind up exhausted and empty. I have to celebrate myself first, foremost and always, and be truly connected to myself. I need to know that some people just won't like me. Some will. So what? They don't all have to sit next to me on the Group W bench. And I need to have my own values and standards -- it's my responsibility to determine what those are. I know if I am being true to myself or not.

So, while I wish I had a magic wand to remove that urge for others to Look Good and Get It Right, that journey of reclaiming myself has made me who I am today. Healing that wound is a profound action, the work of a lifetime. I wouldn't really want to rob anyone of that. What I most want is for people to see the lie of separation so that they may begin that powerful and life-giving journey for themselves.

'Prometheus' Dictionary: Translations For Earth-Dwellers

If you're gearing up to see Ridley Scott's sci-fi flick for the first time, make sure you're well-versed in its extraterrestrial lingo.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

If you're headed out to theaters this weekend to see Ridley Scott's "Prometheus," there are two likely explanations: You've been hounded by your friends who have already seen it with theories and a need for discussion or you're one of those friends and need to see it again.

Either way, "Prometheus" is a dense movie filled with symbolism, call-backs to the original "Alien," and mysteries with elliptical answers, so it might be best to go into the theater with a bit of a primer for what's about to happen.

Whether you're new to "Prometheus" or you're very familiar with the work of Weyland Industries, here are some things to consider before heading into the theater. There are no major spoilers here, but if you want to go into "Prometheus" completely fresh, you should probably stop reading.

Prometheus: The titan who molded man from clay and gave them fire, which he stole from the gods. As punishment, an eagle repeatedly ate his liver, which regenerated daily.

Weyland Industries: The corporation which funds the mission in "Prometheus," creators of the David 8 android, and antecedent to the Weyland-Yutani Corporation from the "Alien" films.

Peter Weyland: Founder of Weyland Industries, played by Guy Pearce.

David 8: An android programmed to assist human life and understand human emotions. He is played by Michael Fassbender in "Prometheus."

Xenomorph: This classic creature from "Alien" bleeds a corrosive acid. It is "a survivor... unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality." The perfect organism.

Space Jockey: An enormous, dead humanoid found at the beginning of "Alien" with his chest burst open, surrounded by xenomorph eggs.

Facehugger: A developmental stage of the classic "Alien" xenomorph. This creature attaches itself to a host's face and deposits an embryo in his or her stomach.

Videogamers no better at talking while driving

Wednesday, June 13, 2012

No matter how much time you've spent training your brain to multitask by playing "Call of Duty," you're probably no better at talking on the phone while driving than anybody else.

A study by the Visual Cognition Laboratory at Duke University wanted to see whether gamers who have spent hours in front of a screen simultaneously watching the map, scanning doorways for bad guys and listening to the chatter of their fellow gamers could answer questions and drive at the same time. The finding: not so much.

"It doesn't matter how much you've trained your brain, we just aren't set up to do this," said Stephen Mitroff, associate professor of psychology and neuroscience and member of the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences.

The lab study measured the performance of 60 undergraduate students on three visual tasks, and then repeated each task while the subject answered Trivial Pursuit questions over a speakerphone. "This was meant to mostly mimic a cell phone conversation," Mitroff says without a trace of irony.

The tasks were the video driving game "TrackMania," a standard multiple-object tracking test that is something like a video version of a shell game, and a timed paper-and-pencil administration of hidden pictures puzzles from Highlights Magazine.

The gamers, all men who regularly played first-person shooter games, were significantly better at driving TrackMania with a steering wheel and pedals than the non-gamers, beating them by about 10 seconds on average. The non-gamers, 19 men and seven women, did just as well as the gamers on the multiple moving objects test and the Highlights puzzles.

It was difficult, acknowledges lead author Sarah Donahue who recently completed her Ph.D. at Duke, to find non-gaming men and gaming women on a college campus.

Performance on the driving test was most harmed by talking on the phone, though it also declined on the other two tests. The gamers drove the racetrack about 2 seconds slower while multitasking, dropping from a mean of 101.7 seconds to 103 seconds. The non-gamers were 10 seconds slower, dropping from 112.9 seconds to 122.5.

In multiple-object tracking and the image search puzzle, both gamers and non-gamers saw similar declines in performance while multi-tasking.

So for most people, Mitroff says, multitasking is probably a bad idea. But there is one small exception. A 2010 study by University of Utah psychologists Jason Watson and David Strayer found five people among 200 undergraduates who truly could multitask without a loss of performance, whom they dubbed "supertaskers."

But the other 97.5 percent of humanity presumably includes the erratic guy you were commuting behind this morning, and you, for that matter.

Peter Chou: HTC won't 'destroy brand image' by releasing super-low-end phones

Android Central

HTC Chief Executive Peter Chou has reaffirmed the company's commitment to focus on higher-end devices in 2012, saying it wouldn't "destroy" its brand image by releasing "cheap, cheap phones" in order to increase product shipments. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the HTC boss added, "We insist on using better materials to make better products that offer premium experience. Many consumers like that."

In the past six months, HTC has refocused its efforts on "hero" products at every level, including the HTC One series at the high end, and phones like the Droid Incredible 4G LTE in the mid-range market. So it's important to recognize what Peter Chou is referring to when he talks about "cheap, cheap phones." Devices like the recently-launched Desire C and One V may be low-end and inexpensive by Western standards, but there's a whole other ecosystem of super low-end phones coming to market in China and developing countries. In China, HTC offers phones around the 2000 yuan level, while the likes of Motorola are pushing for even cheaper 1000 yuan devices. At this price point, Chou says, "we won't have good products."

Whatever the case, this more or less confirms that HTC doesn't intend to release phones that are any cheaper than current budget offerings like the Desire C, and that design and build quality remain priorities for the manufacturer (though that's long been clear to anyone who's used HTC's phones.) In the fiercely competitive smartphone market of 2012, HTC will be hoping its focus on mid-level and above devices will set it apart from its competition.

With Obamacare Still In Play, GoHealth Lands $50M For Health Insurance Comparison Shopping

Screen shot 2012-06-13 at 1.54.32 AMThis month, the Supreme Court is expected to rule on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare), deciding whether or not adults in the U.S. will be required to purchase healthcare. If the Court rules in favor, millions of Americans will soon be in the market for health insurance. This would be a boon for companies like GoHealth, the Chicago-based tech company behind GoHealthInsurance.com, an online portal that allows consumers to comparison shop for health coverage. That's part of the reason that GoHealth is taking on a $50 million equity investment from middle market investment firm, Norwest Equity Partners. In the event the individual mandate does pass, GoHealth wants to be ready for a potentially huge flock of irritated healthcare shoppers.
