If The iPhone 5 Really Looks Like This, Apple ... - Business Insider

Over the past few days, the latest round of purported pictures of Apple's forthcoming iPhone 5 have hit the web.

And I can't be the only potential customer who is deflated by what they see.

In fact, I'll go far enough to say that, if the iPhone 5 looks like the pictures that have recently appeared, Apple may be screwed.

Why?

Because the "iPhone 5" looks pretty much like the iPhone 4S. Which looked exactly like the iPhone 4, a phone that is now two years old.

In the meantime, Samsung and other manufacturers have come out with phones that make people's jaws drop, such as the Galaxy S3, which has a (relatively) humongous screen. Although the Apple faithful may start hyperventilating about things like the movement or elimination of a button, most phone buyers couldn't care less. Now that most phones do the same things and work pretty much the same way, the most obvious (and, arguably, important) difference between them is the screen.

In short, the Galaxy feels like a next-generation phone. The iPhone, meanwhile, looks small and old. And the pictures that purport to be of the iPhone 5 show a phone that is pretty much the same small, old phone.

(Yes, they've moved the camera an inch. And it's longer. And it has a metal back. Whoop-de-do.)

(And, yes, apparently the screen is a little taller. Somehow that isn't the same. Check out the size difference in the photo below between the current iPhone and the Galaxy: A bit taller won't cut it.)

To be sure, regardless of what the iPhone 5 ends up looking like, the Apple faithful will scarf up tens of millions of them. They'll line up around the block and sleep outside the stores. They'll rave about the amazing slickness and geniosity and sophistication of Apple, especially as compared to the plebeian "bigness" of Samsung (the Galaxy will no doubt be dismissed as the McMansion of phones).

But, secretly, a lot of those faithful will be disappointed.

And, more importantly, so will tens of millions of other customers and potential customers.

As they should be.

Because it will make it clear that one observation that many Apple skeptics make is dead-on correct--namely that each new generation of the iPhone offers less and less improvement over the prior generation, and, thus, gives customers less reason to upgrade. This, combined with carriers increasingly making moves to discourage customers from upgrading frequently (see AT&T's stealthy changes, which may have helped hurt Apple's iPhone sales in the June quarter), will stretch out the upgrade cycles. And that will mean fewer sales--and less growth--for Apple.

Which screen would you rather spend 18 hours a day using?

Apple's competitors, meanwhile, are on a tear.

In the past year, as Apple moved back its iPhone release schedule and then released a phone that seemed like only a modest refresh of the prior version, Apple's competitors have been gaining ground. Samsung sold 52 million smartphones in Q2, twice as many as Apple, and is now the clear worldwide smartphone leader. Samsung's Galaxy S3, which some reviewers say is better than the iPhone, has sold very well in its first couple of months on the market.

(Our gadget god, Steve Kovach, who is a huge Apple fan, is one of those who concluded that the Galaxy is better than the iPhone. He'd still buy an iPhone over the Galaxy, but only because of the "ecosystem"--the app store, the apps, etc. And although that ecosystem is obviously a big competitive advantage for Apple, it's safe to say if people feel forced to use an inferior phone just because of the "ecosystem," they're going to be disappointed.)

Despite the amazing success of the iPad (which will soon face serious, low-priced competition of its own), the iPhone is still by far and away Apple's most important product. The iPhone generates about half of Apple's revenue, and, likely, a lot more than half of Apple's profits.

If Apple's stock is to power its way to the the $1,000 that most analysts and investors now expect, the iPhone has to keep going gangbusters. And releasing a phone that looks pretty much like the same old iPhone--with a screen that now seems small--probably won't get the job done.

So here's hoping those pictures aren't actually of the iPhone 5.

Jordyn Wieber Falters, Falls Short of Gymnastics Finals

A dramatic Sunday night in London ended with one of America's best hopes for a Gold Medal in tears yesterday, as Jordyn Wieber failed to qualify for all-around final in Women's Gymnastics.

The reigning world champion faltered a bit on her vault, beam, bars and floor routines, earning scores below teammates Aly Raisman and Gabrielle Douglas. Only two representatives from each country are permitted to perform in the final round.

Olympic photo

"It's a little bit of a disappointment," the 17-year old Wieber said in a statement. "It's always been a dream of mine to compete for the all-around at the Olympics, shoot for that gold medal. But I'm really proud of Aly and Gabby both. And I'm glad that I'll be able to help the team out in the team finals."

Questions now arise over both the judging and the rules of this sport.

Wieber's coach, John Geddert, acknowledged that his pupil didn't enjoy her best day, but was still taken aback by her numbers.

"That's the lowest floor score she's gotten... ever," said Geddert. "And again, they gave her nothing in her floor routine that was questionable."

The other issue is why only two athletes per country are allowed to move on to the final 24. This is the Olympics. Shouldn't it showcase the very best in the world, regardless of how many of those athletes represent the same nation?

Wieber is now turning her attention to her next competition: the team final, which take places tomorrow.

"Thank you all for your love and support," she Tweeted last night. "I am so proud of our team today and I can't wait for team finals!!"

GL conveys its Centralized Supervisory and Control ... - VoIP News

GL Communications Inc. conveyed today its Centralized Supervisory and Control Systems for Mass Transit Networks.Gaithersburg, MD July 28, 2012

Speaking to the press, Mr. Vijay Kulkarni, CEO of the company said, ?a typical centralized train and facilities control system for an underground metro rail transit network in general gathers data from wayside instrumentation for train control and provides supervisory control and data acquisition for managing the various subsystems at the train stations. The term SCADA is used to describe control and management solutions in a variety of industries. SCADA systems collect data from various monitoring and control points. A central computer at that time processes the data, and controls the various subsystems. SCADA systems play a major role in modern industrial enterprises, for instance, public utilities, manufacturing plants, oil and gas stations, and water and electric utilities."

He added, ?Typical SCADA systems consists of: Input and output devices, Remote terminal units, Programming logic controllers, Centralized computers, Communications systems and interfaces, User Interfaces, Standard and/or custom SCADA or HMI software.

The Remote Terminal Unit or the Programming Logic Controller plays a key role in collecting and controlling the subsystems/parts. SCADA systems typically require little or no human intervention, even though they have capabilities built-in for such possibilities for remote monitoring and control. They may utilize long or short distance communications, leased T1/wired/wireless networks, for connectivity depending upon the need and circuit availability.?

Mr. Kulkarni furthermore added, ?One of the main difficulties that many organizations face is integration of several discrete SCADA systems that have been delivered over time. This is because of the SCADA industry's use of proprietary hardware, software and communications protocols. For instance, in a typical metro rail system, centralized train control and traction power management systems may be similar. Conversely, building management systems for intrusion, fire and security could be very different in that they may use different set of protocols and communication standards and practices. As well, Fire Management Systems must follow the rules established by the State's Fire Marshall and/or Authority Having Jurisdiction. They are developed by vendors in different industry groups and may have different types of specialized devices.

Founded in 1986, GL Communications Inc. Provides technical consulting, engineering and testing services in wireless, telecom, and IT disciplines. China official calls on team to be "modest"

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's top diplomat told the country's Olympic athletes to behave in a "modest and unassuming" way in London, state media reported on Friday, as the country tries to manage expectations for a team which topped the medals table in Beijing in 2008.

By the time the Beijing Games closed on August 24 2008, China had earned 51 golds, leapfrogging the United States' 36 golds and topping the medals table for the first time.

With all eyes on whether China will be able to repeat that feat in London, State Councillor Dai Bingguo, China's top diplomat and the government's representative to the opening ceremony, sought to temper emotions.

"We are still a developing country and should keep a modest and prudent attitude even though China is becoming more and more globally influential," the official Xinhua news agency cited Dai as telling the Chinese team in London. ? "We are considered a big sporting country but we are still not a sporting giant. There are still gaps between China and global sports giants in many aspects," he added.

"We must be modest and unassuming in learning from other countries and continue to raise our athletic abilities."

Chinese officials have been keen to put the London Games into perspective, pointing out they will not have home advantage in Britain, will have to deal with different food and will be fielding some new and untested faces.

Still, China has not slackened off in its Olympics medals quest. Topping the table in Beijing was accompanied by a wave of national pride, the culmination of China's "100 year dream" to host the world's most prestigious sports event.

Dai reminded the Chinese team the eyes of China's 1.3 billion people would be watching - as would the ruling Communist Party, which has cultivated a Soviet-style sports system which still generally produces the country's top athletes.

"I hope everyone works hard ... to present a gift for the 18th Party Congress this year," Dai added, referring to a key meeting later this year which will usher in a generational leadership change. (Reporting by Sabrina Mao and Ben Blanchard, Editing by Matt Falloon)

Turkey partially closes border with Syria

Turkey indefinitely closed three border crossings Wednesday to Turkish nationals trying to get into Syria, citing security concerns in the strife-torn neighbour, officials said.

"The crossings of Turkish citizens at Cilvegozu, Oncupinar et Karkamis have been... suspended because their security cannot be guaranteed on the other side," Turkish customs minister Hayati Yazici said at a news conference.

Syrian rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad's regime seized control last week of three border posts opposite the Turkish crossings after clashes with Syrian forces.

Turkish trucks were burned and looted during the fighting at Bab al-Hawa, the Syrian post opposite Turkey's Cilvegozu crossing.

Commercial trucks from Syria and any other foreign country will also be barred in both directions but any foreign national trying to leave Syria will be allowed to do so, Yazici said.

A Turkish official told AFP that foreigners who want to cross the border into Syria would be required to sign a document that warns them about potential dangers there.

Turkey and Syria share a border stretching nearly 900 kilometres (560 miles).

Background check applications for gun buys surge in Colorado

DENVER (Reuters) - The number of people in Colorado applying for background checks to purchase firearms has surged in the aftermath of the movie theater shootings in Aurora, law enforcement officials said on Tuesday.

In the three days after the rampage, 2,887 people were approved for gun buys, compared with 2,012 the weekend before, a 43.5 percent increase, according to data supplied by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

The bureau has an online background check system that tracks and processes gun permit applications. The system does not show how many guns were actually sold.

A gunman clad in tactical body armor and a gas mask and carrying three guns opened fire at a midnight showing of the new "Batman" film early on Friday, killing 12 people and wounding 58 others.

Suspect James Eagan Holmes, 24, was arrested minutes later behind the theater and made an initial court appearance on Monday.

Brandon Baker, owner of Rocky Mountain Guns & Ammo in Parker, Colorado, about 15 miles from Aurora, said business had been brisk since the shooting.

"Our gun sales have gone up, but we've had more requests for training," said Baker, a certified firearms instructor. "I'm booked up for the next 2 1/2 months."

Most of the people seeking firearms or training had been women, Baker said, adding his training included "situational awareness" in addition to firearms proficiency.

Milan's modern fandom pops up

A small, obvious, but still brilliant part of soccer?s information age has been the acknowledgement of fan knowledge: the general acceptance supporters know more about their team than most media, particularly media on regional or national beats. This seems so obvious to us now that it?s hard to believe there was a time when this wasn?t a given. Of course people who live and bleed their teams are likely to know more than somebody synthesizing a league?s worth of data. Just because that knowledge wasn?t punched through a typewriter, put through a press and offered on a street corner didn?t mean it failed to exist.

Having knowledge, however, is not the same as using it wisely. People who?ve built reputations in the soccer information business use more than mere knowledge. They are the best filters of that information. They take the data and describe with a completeness ? an even-handedness ? that?s rarely seen in fan forums. When that description requires them to step onto one side of a debate, they made sure they?ve covered all relevant angles, assuring their depictions can transcend any reasonable accusations of partisanship.

Fanaticism is inherently partisan. You can?t cover yourself in a team?s colors and pretend they don?t obscure your view. At a minimum, it becomes a call you don?t get to make. If you?re conveying information about the Columbus Crew under a yellow and black banner, you?re forcing the reader to pause and consider motive.

In a vast majority of instances, issues are so cut-and-dry that partisanship has no effect on how information is processed. After all, 5-0 loss is bad no matter how much you support the Portland Timbers. How poorly the team played is a little more open to interpretation, though when you throw out the extreme voices on a given message board/comment thread, most fans people see the world through a similar prism.

But there are rare occasions where that prism screws everything up, usually on issues that hit at club identity. We saw this last year with Liverpool when many fans blindly followed Kenny Dalglish?s defense of Luis Suarez. For most fans, opposing Dalglish?s stance on Suarez was tantamount to turning their back on the club. Such was Kenny Dalglish?s stature at Liverpool. Such is the nature of being a supporter.

We also saw this late last season in Genoa, when fans lept onto the field to demand players remove their shirts. It was a powerful measure, one that brought about emotional responses from the team, but it was also completely inappropriate. An emotional response turned dangerous, with fans turning to violence in defense of the identity they?d ascribed to the club.

A similar identity crisis is developing in Milan, and as with the cases in Liverpool and Genoa, fans are letting their passion supersede their judgment. AC Milan ultras are protesting summer transfer window business that?s seen seven prominent players leave the club. A class action lawsuit on the part of season ticket holders alleges false advertising. The club?s started reimbursements. President Silvio Berlusconi is considering making a video addressing the uprising, while supporters recently held a funeral in front of club headquarters?commemorating?the team?s death.

source: Reuters

After a decade at Milan, defender Alessandro Nesta left the club this summer. (Photo: Reuters)

It?s a harsh stance, one that looks downright foolish when you look at the seven transfers. For most of the season it was assumed many of Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf, Gennaro Gattuso, Pippo Inzaghi and Mark Van Bommel go. Was it shocking to see them all leave together? Of course, especially the first four names, but the five-some averaged 35.8 years old and 11.2 starts. Milan could have been sentimental and kept a couple of them, but the club?s decision to move on is justifiable. It certainly shouldn?t spur a mass uprising.

Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are another story, but consistent with the history of international soccer, every player has a price. Juventus had theirs for Zinedine Zidane. Manchester United had theirs for Cristiano Ronaldo. Just three years ago, Milan had theirs for Kak?, a more clearly motivated by money. The same reasoning applies to the Silva-Ibrahimovic sale. ?As James Horncastle noted on Twitter, the wages saved combined with the transfer fees mean Milan nets ?170 million.

Deconstructed, Milan?s summer business seems to be seven individually justifiable player moves, none of which were done capriciously. Had Paris Saint-Germain not backed an armored truck up to Via Turati, Milan would have probably held on to Silva and Ibrahimovic, and the club certainly could have moved on from their veterans sooner (Inzaghi was 38 and only make seven league appearances last year). Fans, scared the moves signal a new, less competitive era for Milan, are left protesting good business, demonstrations reminiscent of an infant rebelling against a parent?s ?No.?

You won?t find many with distance from Milan (emotional or physical) questioning the Rossoneri?s moves. They were tough decisions, but they were probably good ones. At a minimum, they?re decisions fans should understand, even if they don?t agree with them. There?s no need for funerals, law suits, or the kind of self-defeating view that would keep Milan a loyal-if-old team that could never balance their books for fear of ultra reaction to their taking advantage of a seller?s market.

Then there is that small, obvious irony belying the entire story. None of these assessments ? be they about aging players or the sale of Milan?s stars ? are news to Rossoneri supporters. They know more about Milan than any of us. They know the team was old. They know the club could use money. They know the recent past has seen the high-priced sale of Kak? and the painful departure of Andrea Pirlo. And they know that over the last two seasons, Milan?s had the best team. Still, they protest. They hold their funerals. They file suits.

Understandably, emotion has gotten the best of them. One year removed from winning Serie A, fans have seen a vision of a vastly less-competitive Milan, but with the Rossoneri rumored to be in for Montpelier?s Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa (arguably the best young defender in Ligue 1), it seems unlikely Berlusconi will merely pocket the money. The club still has Alexandre Pato, Robinho, and Alessandro Cassano. They still have Antonio Nocerino, Maximo Ambrosini and Kevin Prince-Boateng. They?ve added Ricardo Montolivo and will bring back the likes of Ignazio Abate, Philippe Mexes, Mathieu Flamini and Sulley Muntari. They should still be a very good team. If they spend some of PSG?s money, they could be a title-contending one.

Not that any this needs to be told to any Milanistas. They know their club is still decent. They know Berlusconi has consistently funded competitive, trophy-winning teams. They just need this moment. Milan ultras need this moment to vent, to act on the emotion spawn from seeing so many favorites go.

But once that emotion is gone, hopefully they can have a good laugh at themselves. A funeral for the Rossoneri? It?s all so dramatic.

Key mutations discovered for medulloblastoma -- most common ...

Researchers at Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Center (DF/CHCC) and several collaborating institutions have linked mutations in specific genes to each of the four recognized subtypes of medulloblastoma, the most common malignant brain tumor of children. The discovery, reported July in the journal Nature, provides doctors with potential biomarkers for guiding and individualizing treatment and reveals prospective therapeutic opportunities for countering this devastating malignancy.

The study was conducted by a research team led by Scott Pomeroy, MD, PhD, Neurologist-in-Chief at Boston Children's Hospital and a neuro-oncologist at DF/CHCC; Yoon-Jae Cho, MD, formerly of Boston Children's and now at Stanford University School of Medicine; and Matthew Meyerson, MD, PhD, of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Broad Institute.

Medulloblastomas occur in the cerebellum (the part of the brain that controls balance and other complex motor functions) and are treated with a combination of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Though overall survival hovers around 70 percent, most survivors are unable to live independently due to the lasting effects of both tumor and treatment.

Doctors have historically classified medulloblastoma patients as either standard or high risk based on biopsy results, but have long suspected that what we call medulloblastoma could actually be several different diseases. Over the last two years, studies by researchers including Pomeroy and his colleagues have bolstered this view by dividing medulloblastoma into four molecular subtypes based on gene expression profiles and copy number variations. Each subtype has a distinct survival rate, ranging from 20 to 90 percent.

"Not only do we now know how to stratify medulloblastomas genomically, we have a firm grasp of what gene mutations drive each molecular subtype," said Pomeroy, who has spent 20 years trying to understand the biological basis of the tumor's variability. "For the first time, we'll be able to classify and treat medulloblastoma based on molecular typing, providing the best therapy with the fewest long-term consequences."

In this new study, Pomeroy and his team used next generation sequencing technologies to read the full complement of protein-coding genes (also called the exome) of tumors from 92 patients. Within these tumors the team discovered that somatic (that is, non-heritable) mutations occur at very low frequency, one-tenth to one-hundredth of that seen in cancers of adults. Specific gene mutations clustered neatly into the four molecular subtypes, although the majority of genes (88%) were mutated only once in the entire tumor collection. Only 12 genes were mutated in more than one tumor, illustrating medulloblastoma's genetic heterogeneity.

Functionally, the mutated genes fell into two broad categories: genes like Shh and Wnt that play direct roles in molecular pathways controlling cell growth, and genes like DDX3X and GPS2 that play more of a coaching role, modulating the activity of other genes.

Taken as a whole, the study's results confirm the view of medulloblastoma as a family of tumors driven by disruptions in just a few common mechanisms. However, the form those disruptions take?the actual mutations or genomic changes?can vary from tumor to tumor.

"The results reflect two emerging genetic themes seen throughout childhood tumors," Pomeroy noted. "First, very low mutation rates, much lower than those seen in adult tumors, and second, the importance of mutations in genes that regulate the function of the cell's growth pathways but which aren't direct components of those pathways."

Some of the study's findings could be translated to patients relatively quickly. For instance, with the main mutations of each subtype in hand, it should soon be possible to rapidly classify individual medulloblastoma patients' tumors and tailor treatment appropriately based on each subtype's known prognosis. In addition, clinical trials of Shh-blocking drugs already under investigation for other cancers could begin within the next couple of years in patients with the medulloblastoma subtype driven by Shh mutations.

Pomeroy credits the high level of cooperation between groups at different institutions studying medulloblastoma as a significant factor in the progress made over the last few years. "Because of our collective efforts, medulloblastoma has gone from an important but obscure tumor to one that we understand better than many other cancers at the molecular level."

DirecTV, Viacom fight to draw in channel punch-out

(AP) ? Viacom and DirecTV fought a bruising fight over fees to a draw Friday and agreed to a long-term deal that ended a 10-day channel blackout.

Their new deal restored MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and other channels to 20 million DirecTV customers and ensured those channels will be available to subscribers on computers and mobile devices in the coming months.

Fans on Twitter expressed relief.

According to terms shared by both sides on Friday, DirecTV Group Inc. will pay about 20 percent more to carry Viacom Inc. channels on satellite TV lineups. That works out to about $600 million in the first year of a seven-year deal. The companies agreed to annual single-digit percentage increases in subsequent years.

DirecTV was able to save itself about $500 million over the entire term by not taking the premium pay TV channel Epix. It said it also was able to send a message that it won't roll over every time a media company threatens to pull channels over fees.

"They realized we were not going to capitulate," said Derek Chang, DirecTV's executive vice president of content strategy.

Investors met the outcome with a ho-hum as the deal was largely in line with expectations.

Shares of both companies edged downward Friday in a declining market. Since the dispute resulted in a blackout the evening of July 10, Viacom shares are down 0.9 percent, closing Friday at $46.41, while DirecTV shares are down 0.7 percent, closing at $48.33. Over the same period, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 1.3 percent.

"I'm not going to engage on who was the winner and who was the loser," said Todd Juenger, an analyst with Bernstein Research. "What we've learned is the fair value of Viacom services, fully tested and vetted in a real marketplace negotiation."

By eking out a large fee increase, Viacom said DirecTV is now paying a rate that is more in line with that of other distributors.

DirecTV's Chang even acknowledged that it had been paying significantly less than competitors for Viacom channels because the deal that just expired had been locked in seven years ago.

Viacom had argued that its networks account for 20 percent of what DirecTV subscribers are watching but cost DirecTV just 5 percent of its overall programming expense. Under the new deal, the Viacom fees will come out to 6 percent.

"It was important to get fair value for our networks," Viacom spokesman Carl Folta said. "We are still one of the most efficient programmers in their bouquet."

By refusing to add Epix to its premium pay TV channel stable, DirecTV was able to save itself a big fixed cost over its entire subscriber base, as the flat fee would have been charged no matter how many subscribers choose to pay more for Epix, a movie channel that is half owned by Viacom.

Media companies typically try to sell rights to their channels as a package, so that fledgling channels are bundled with those already in high demand. Adding Epix to DirecTV would have been a big win for Viacom, as it's now carried by only a handful of distributors, including rival satellite TV provider Dish Network Corp. But that was seen as unlikely, partly because Epix movies are available to Netflix subscribers 90 days after debuting on TV and the channel might have been hard to sell to customers.

The damage from the blackout to both sides was real but not permanent.

DirecTV spokesman Darris Gringeri said the company lost subscribers because of the dispute, "but against our subscriber base, it was not a significant number."

Viacom lost out on 10 days' worth of fees from DirecTV ? roughly $14 million ? and took a short-term audience hit that will cost the company advertising revenue.

Both sides suffered brand damage ? Viacom because it was tagged for being a root cause of rising monthly TV bills, and DirecTV for not giving subscribers what they paid for. Even Comedy Central's Jon Stewart slammed network parent Viacom for acting like China in pulling some shows from the Internet as part of the dispute, hurting people who weren't DirecTV subscribers.

But the fight was short enough to forget about and move on. Plenty of disputes have lasted just a heartbeat ? like ABC's 15-minute blackout of the Oscars to Cablevision subscribers in March 2010. Others have dragged on for months.

"It was fortunate they were able to resolve it before the back and forth got any worse than it did," Barclays analyst Anthony DiClemente said.

DiClemente said the relatively quick resolution boded well for an end to AMC Networks Inc.'s continuing dispute with Dish, which has gone on since July 1.

Elder care: The struggle of losing control of their lives ...

BY CAROL ABAYA
NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM
THE SANDWICH GENERATION

Strong-minded Alpha people -- those who have to control everything ? have a harder time aging than those with more flexible personalities.

Alpha elderly, who have controlled their lifestyle, have difficulty even asking for help. An 89-year-old former university professor recently told me that when he realized he needed help he was shocked. He said not being able to control his life and having to ask for help had a dramatic emotional affect -- one he is still trying to deal with.

The psychological effect, he said is that, ?I couldn?t believe that I could no longer control everything in my life. Losing control has been frustrating.?

In the past, he said, he was easily able to remedy any problem that occurred. ?Now I have to think before I act. I have to react properly physically or I may injure myself,?he told me. ?For example, I took something out of the cabinet and forgot to close the door. I hit my head, which made me dizzy. Luckily I did not pass out. Little happenings seem to become major problems.?

This professor (Professor Emeritus from a top university) traveled extensively and taught in several underdeveloped countries. He had numerous foreign students who became high officials in their home country. All his achievements still hasn?t made it easier for him to accept old age. ?It has been very hard to accept my limitations - especially physical ones,? he said.

He said he now has to listen to what his body tells him. ?Am I going to do something now that will cause a physical handicap?? he now asks himself.

He said he is upset that he can no longer control the variables in his life. In the end, he said, ?You have to let your body tell you what you can do and what you can no longer do.?

The key to living at this age, he said, is to try to establish a pattern in one?s daily life. ?Create a routine; become a creature of habit.? The problem here is that because of declining health (some major problems) doctors appointments keep interfering in a daily routine.

Aging experts point out that emotional issues in aging can override everything in the past. And that sandwich generationers need to fully understand what their parent(s) are going through. Sandwich generationers need to accept how a parent feels about getting old and then deal with the situation appropriately.

This professor was talking about both physical and emotional needs. This subject recently came up when I attended a Rock Shabbat service.

Interestingly, the Rabbi?s sermon dealt with the inability of many elders to ask for help when they could use help or even think about their emotional needs.

The Rabbi related the story of a member?s hospitalization. The Rabbi heard about this days later from a member who heard about it from another member. He said he would have immediately gone to the hospital to visit this member.

While the Rabbi briefly dealt with physical help and chores that might have to be done, he spent most of the sermon dealing with the spiritual aspects of life and the fact that patients and their family seldom think about spiritual health. That old mind-body connection. He emphasized the importance of emotional well-being in the healing process. The mind CAN tell the body to heal itself.

While the Rabbi did not mention the many medical studies on this subject, there is scientific evidence that shows how a positive attitude and spirituality can have a positive impact on healing. These studies also show how a negative attitude can result in minor medical problems becoming major ones and in severe depression.

Pakistan bans mobile phones during official meetings | sarkaritel.com

Islamabad, July 18? Fearing information leaks, the Pakistani government has barred the use of mobile phones during official meetings.

The National Telecom and Information Technology Security Board cautioned that mobile phones could be used for dubious purposes if not handled carefully by senior officials, reported Dawn.

The board noted that there are now multiple features like data storage, voice and SMS chatting, e-business and banking management, faster broadband applications and many other social and global internet applications.

Calling the mobile phone a double edge weapon, with sophisticated communication tools, the board noted it could be put to use both for positive and negative purposes.

It also noted that most mobile phones have inbuilt camera facility can be used for recording sensitive documents or data and hence may result in serious security lapses.

Approximately 90 percent of Pakistanis live within areas that have cell phone coverage and more than half of all Pakistanis have access to a cell phone. With 108 million mobile subscribers ? out of a total 180 million-plus population ? in April 2011, Pakistan has the highest mobile penetration rate in the South Asian region.

Combating Boston's Youth Obesity Problem | BU Today | Boston ...

At yesterday?s announcement of a collaborative new public health initiative were Boston Public Health Commission executive director Barbara Ferrer (SPH?88) (from left), University President Robert A. Brown, and Mayor Thomas Menino (Hon.?01). Photo by Cydney Scott

Boston?much like the rest of the country?is in the midst of an obesity epidemic.

More than 60 percent of adults living in the city are overweight or obese, with even higher rates for Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan residents, according to Boston Public Health Commission executive director Barbara Ferrer (SPH?88). The statistics are equally dire when it comes to Boston?s youth. Ferrer estimates that 30 to 40 percent of Boston?s school-age children are overweight or obese, with about 22 percent falling into the latter category. People have become less physically active, she says, and do not have a healthy diet.

To help combat these alarming statistics, Boston University, in conjunction with the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) and the Boston Centers for Youth & Family (BCYF), announced yesterday the creation of a new public health initiative, the Boston University Health, Fitness and Wellness Program. Informally, the program will be known as the Boston FitRec@Blackstone Community Center.

At a press conference in the community center?s South End courtyard, University President Robert A. Brown and Mayor Thomas Menino (Hon.?01) gathered in the late morning heat to announce this and two other initiatives designed to reduce obesity.

?Wow, what a way of rebuilding young people?s lives with this gift,? Menino told the assembled crowd, his voice carrying over the pounding of shoes from a nearby basketball court. ?I look at BU because they always step up to the plate, they far exceed anyone else. Thank you, BU, for caring about the young people of our city.?

The three projects, valued at more than $1.2 million, will be funded by the University over the next five years; the other two are 100 summer camp scholarships for area youth and the donation of two hours of free ice time each week to the Allston-Brighton Youth Hockey league.

The University proposed the initiatives in response to community leaders? concerns and a needs assessment conducted by the BPHC and the BCYF indicating that local youth need more summer program options for battling obesity.

This summer, the Blackstone Community Center?s 2,000-square-foot fitness center (currently housing showers and locker rooms) will be reconfigured to include a personal training space and up to 25 state-of-the art exercise machines?from treadmills and ellipticals to exercise bikes and weights. The five-year investment at the community center alone will be worth just over $900,000.

Staff and student employees in BU?s Department of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (PERD) will supervise the center and train BCYF staff on fitness assessments and how to properly use the equipment.

?There are marvelous schools within the University that serve people in an urban environment,? Brown said. ?This new facility will be the same kind of fitness environment that our BU students have, with state-of-the-art facilities. It?s a win-win situation?we?re helping the community and our students will gain experience in their chosen fields when they volunteer at the center.?

Ferrer says the University?s contribution is unique, because instead of merely instructing people to be more active, it is providing the community with the tools and resources necessary to make a difference.

?If you tell people they need to exercise, but they have no affordable place to do so and they live on a limited income, that?s not a message that resonates,? says Ferrer, a School of Public Health adjunct assistant professor. She says that most families are able to afford a community center membership (often offered free or at a reduced price for youth), and that this new program will ensure access to good machines, experienced physical trainers, and additional programs like nutrition classes through future collaborations with SPH, Sargent College, and the School of Social Work. ?This is an initiative that?s really going to make a tremendous difference to the city in fighting the obesity epidemic.?

The 100 summer camp scholarships, worth $200,000, provided by the University annually over the next five years will be distributed by BCYF staff to local youth. These two-week camps, held at BU, will focus on skills training in basketball, hockey, wrestling, softball, lacrosse, and rowing.

And beginning this fall BU will donate two hours of prime ice time at Walter Brown Arena on Sundays, from noon to 2 p.m., to the Allston-Brighton Youth Hockey league. That initiative emerged through discussions with the Boston University Task Force and is valued at $125,000.

New Statement From American Heart ... - Food and Drink Digital

ATLANTA, July 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?Using low-calorie sweeteners in beverages and other foods has the potential to help people reach and maintain a healthy body weight and is helpful for glucose control for people with diabetes, according to a new scientific statement from the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association. The statement is published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation and the American Diabetes Association journal Diabetes Care, and confirms previous support statements from these two major health organizations.

According to scientific statement lead author, Christopher Gardner, Ph.D., associate professor of medicine at Stanford University in California, "While they are not magic bullets, smart use of non-nutritive sweeteners could help you reduce added sugars in your diet, therefore lowering the number of calories you eat. Reducing calories could help you attain and maintain a healthy body weight, and thereby lower your risk of heart disease and diabetes. But there are caveats."

"For example, if you choose a beverage sweetened with non-nutritive sweeteners instead of a 150-calorie soft drink, but then reward yourself with a 300-calorie slice of cake or cookies later in the day, non-nutritive sweeteners are not going to help you control your weight because you added more calories to your day than you subtracted," said Dr. Gardner. "However, if you substitute the beverage with non-nutritive sweeteners for a 150-calorie sugar-sweetened soft drink, and don't compensate with additional calories, that substitution could help you manage your weight because you would be eating fewer calories."

Non-nutritive (low-calorie) sweeteners covered in the statement include acesulfame potassium, aspartame, neotame, saccharin, stevia and sucralose. The safety of these non-nutritive sweeteners is supported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The American Heart Association recommends that most women eat no more than 100 calories per day and men no more than 150 calories per day of added sugars. This recommendation is based on research that showed diets high in added sugars contribute to obesity and cardiovascular heart disease. Limiting intake of added sugars can help reduce calorie intake and can help people achieve or maintain a healthy body weight.

Beyond calories, and focusing more specifically on added sugars, non-nutritive sweeteners have their place for people with diabetes."

For example, soft drinks sweetened with non-nutritive sweeteners do not increase blood glucose levels, and thus can provide a sweet option for those with diabetes," said Diane Reader, R.D., CDE, one of the statement authors speaking on behalf of the American Diabetes Association.

"The use of non-nutritive sweeteners may be used in a carbohydrate-controlled food plan, to potentially reduce carbohydrate intake which may aid in weight management and diabetes control," said Reader.

"We are pleased to learn of this new position statement," noted Haley Stevens, Ph.D., president of the Calorie Control Council. "With the increasing rates of overweight and obesity, low and reduced calorie sweeteners and the products that use them offer consumers great taste with fewer calories - and controlling calories can aid in weight control and diabetes management."

"For anyone trying to monitor or reduce their intake of calories or added sugars, the potential impact of choosing 'diet products' with non-nutritive sweeteners needs to be considered within the context of the overall diet. Strategies for reducing calories and added sugars also involve choosing foods which have no added sugars or non-nutritive sweeteners - such as vegetables, fruits, high-fiber whole grains, and non- or low-fat dairy," Dr. Gardner said.

A full PDF of the statement can be found on the American Heart Association's website. For more information on low-calorie sweeteners and how to incorporate low-calorie foods and beverages into a healthy lifestyle, visit www.caloriecontrol.org.
